Egg roll

Egg rolls are a popular Asian appetizer featuring a crispy, deep-fried wrapper filled with a savory mixture of vegetables and often meat. Here’s a basic recipe for making egg rolls at home:

Ingredients:

  • For the filling:

    • 2 cups shredded cabbage (green or Napa)
    • 1 cup shredded carrots
    • 1 cup bean sprouts (optional)
    • 1/2 cup diced bell pepper (optional)
    • 1/2 cup cooked and shredded chicken, pork, or shrimp (optional)
    • 2 green onions, chopped
    • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • For the egg rolls:

    • Egg roll wrappers (available in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores)
    • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the filling: In a large skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the cabbage, carrots, bell pepper, and any meat if using. Stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Add the bean sprouts, soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onions. Stir to combine, and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

  2. Wrap the egg rolls: Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface with a corner pointing towards you. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the filling near the center of the wrapper. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, then fold in the sides and roll tightly away from you. Seal the top corner with a little water. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

  3. Fry the egg rolls: In a deep frying pan or pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add a few egg rolls at a time, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.

  4. Serve: Enjoy the egg rolls hot, with dipping sauces like soy sauce, sweet and sour sauce, or hot mustard.

Tips:

  • You can customize the filling with your favorite vegetables or proteins.
  • For a healthier option, you can brush the egg rolls with oil and bake them at 400°F (200°C) for about 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through until golden.

Enjoy your homemade egg rolls!
